Rachel Doren uses her experiences healing from the grief of autoimmune hair loss (Alopecia Universalis) and overcoming body image issues to inform her paintings and music. She is inspired by her the way her tropical plants evolve and grow in difficult environments. Rachel uses her experiences of overcoming and the communities she is part of to inspire her work. Rachel creates art to heal herself, her communities, and the world.
After working in digital design for over 8 years, Rachel uses the juxtaposition of natural forms and seemingly digital shapes which elicits debate on if her work is digitally or manually produced, bringing up discussions about humanity’s innate biophilia with nature even in a post-digital age. Her painting process involves meditating and journaling about a theme and then intuitively and methodically layering shapes and designs to craft densely metallic and detailed thematic paintings. She uses calligraphy brushes to paint with natural metallic colored mica pigment on dark canvas-mounted board backdrops. The results are glowing portraits and dense semi-abstract visual landscapes on midnight backdrops.
Rachel was born in NYC, got her BFA in Art and Psychology from The University of Texas, and studied Multi-Media Design at the Auraria Campus in Denver, Colorado where she now lives and works. Rachel has exhibited at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Museum of Boulder, and Mirus Gallery. Rachel donates 10% of all of her creative earnings to the ACLU, The Environmental Defense Fund, The Ocean Cleanup, and Amnesty International.
